Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
